Quitting smoking even for one day has benefits.
The Great American Smokeout® is November 18
Lincoln – Quitting smoking isn’t easy; having a plan and the right tools can help you be successful. Let the Great American Smokeout event on November 18th be the day you start the journey toward a smoke-free life. Thousands of people who smoke across the country will join together in taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk, taking advantage of resources and support to help quit.
Studies show that quitting smoking, even for one day, has positive health benefits. The Nebraska Tobacco Quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW) is a free resource that can help you. It offers information and access to quit coaches who can answer questions, assist with making a quit plan, and help you access FDA-approved quit smoking medication. It’s true that quitting smoking is not easy; but you don’t have to do it alone.
While the rates of cigarette smoking in Nebraska have declined (to 14% in 2019), there is still work to be done. Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. Some groups smoke more heavily or at higher rates and suffer disproportionately from smoking-related cancer and other diseases.
No matter what age you are or when you began smoking, quitting improves health both immediately and over the long term. Getting help through counseling and FDA-approved medications can dramatically increase chances of quitting successfully. Here are some additional tips for those quitting tobacco:
Do not use tobacco—not even one puff or chew!
Stay active—walking, exercising or doing other activities will help.
Drink lots of water and 100% juices. Limit or avoid alcohol.
Talk to your healthcare provider and let them know you want to quit.
Change your routine. Use a different route to work. Drink tea instead of coffee. Eat different foods.
