Secondhand/thirdhand smoke can increase risk of sudden infant death syndrome. (Copy)

Keep your baby away from smoke and places where people smoke. That is one way to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Cigarette smoke, marijuana smoke and any other kinds of smoke contain toxic chemicals. They can be especially harmful to babies. When people smoke around babies, the babies breathe in secondhand smoke. When people smoke in the house, thirdhand smoke settles into carpeting, furniture, bedding and other surfaces. That is harmful to breathe, too, particularly for babies. Even smoke that has settled into the clothing or hair of someone who smokes, may be harmful to babies. That is something to remember before you pick up a baby and hold her or him after you have been smoking.
